Speak on the housing problems in GB. How to obtain a home in Britain?

Blocks of high-rise flats have been erected in large numbers in London and in many other big cities. Just after the World War II this immense 20-to-30 stores buildings hundreds of feet in high, were thought to be the ideal solution to the dual problem of acute housing shortage and lack of space in urban areas. At first the ultra-modern apartments were much sought after by city dwellers, and hundreds of the vast blocks had been built before anyone began to doubt that they were suitable places for people, children especially, to live in. the evidence has been amassed by sociologists who suggest that severe loneliness and deep depression are brought about by life within their great towers. Some psychologists even maintain that unduly large proportion of their inhabitants suffer from mental disorders and develop criminal tendencies. As a result, of the recent queries plans for new high-rise are being scrapped.

Most British people obtain their home in one of three ways. The majority, about two-thirds, buy their own houses or flats. About 10 percent of the population lives in flats or houses which they rent privately from another person or organization. Other people live in accommodation that is owned by and rented from their local council. Council houses or flats are available to everyone but in many areas there are long waiting lists and the homes go to the most needy people.

There are 2 types of organization which are central to the buying of houses and flats. The first is the estate agency. It`s, essentially, a shop which arranges for the sale of homes. Firstly, the agent visits the house and calls the price of it. Then the hosts get to know how much the agent will charge for his service and if they are happy with his proposal, the agent will publish details of the house in the form of give-away leaflets or in a newspaper. The leaflet will describe the house in detail, describing the position, number and sizes of its rooms, garden and so on. The potential buyers go to the estate agency and inspect the details of the house on offers. If they are interested they may make an offer to the Smiths via the estate agent.

The second type of institution involved in house buying and selling – the building society. The main function is to lend people enough money to buy a house.

Many British people have building society accounts. The society charges people a higher interest rate on the amount borrowed. This long-term loan is called mortgage.

As a result new hosts will pay for more than the original price of the house because of the interest on the loan but in this way they can afford it.

Natural disasters help to remind people of the value of life and their fellowship with one another?

There are plenty of different natural disasters such as floods, volcanos, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, tornados and so on. All this disasters are cause of much damage and death and injury of many people. Being aware of possible dangers, people should be prepared to protect themselves, their families and communities. Two important preparation steps are the developing of emergency plan and assembling a supply kit.

We, humans, now dominate the Earth — and our planet is in grave danger of suffering from our activities.
But from time to time the Earth threatens us, warns of the danger of killing the planet and ourselves. We have to be very careful what we do with nature, provoking to some extent natural disasters like drought, sandstorm and famine in Africa, flood in Netherlands, hurricanes in the USA, volcanoes and earthquakes in Turkey, Japan, Mexico, Italy, Armenia, typhoons and tidal waves, landslide and fire. Natural disasters make big problems and people all over the world come to help the regions where the catastrophe has happened. Different countries send to the area of the natural disaster food and medical supplies, as well as doctors, nurses, blankets, tents and clothes.
Natural catastrophes, being great tragedies, teach us to be merciful to the other people and to our planet — the Earth.

Where would an Englishman prefer to live: in a block of flats, in a city or in a detached house in the countryside? Talk about advantages and disadvantages of living in the city or in the country?

Nowadays lots of young British people tend to move to blocks of flats in cities in search of better life. On the contrary, many adults consider such a lifestyle quite dangerous for them and their children.

On the one hand, city life has lots of advantages. For example, it is often easier to get prestigious education and to find a well-paid job. Besides, there is a wider choice of shops, sports facilities and health centers. What is more, if you live in the city, you can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, and go to theatres or concerts. All in all, city lifestyle is full of variety so you will never feel bored.

On the other hand, we must admit that city life is rather unsafe as there is a lot of crime and violence. What is more, transport and industry are the main reasons for all kinds of pollution therefore city dwellers often have more problems with their health. Last of all, young people living in cities are likely to acquire such bad habits as smoking, drinking alcohol or even taking drugs.

In conclusion, I think that city life has its pros and cons. However, if we try and solve the problems of crime and pollution, then living in the city will be really enjoyable. As for me, I would prefer to live in the city because I am keen on visiting theatres and don't mind noise and pollution.
