I think the climate in Great Britain is generally mild and temperate, due to the influence of its location. The climate in Britain is usually described as cool, temperate and humid. British people say: "Other countries have a climate, in England we have weather." The weather in Britain changes very quickly. One day may be fine and the next day may be wet. The morning may be warm and the evening may be cool. Therefore it is natural for the people to use the comparison "as changeable as the weather" for a person who often changes his or her mood or opinion about something. The weather is the favorite topic of conversation in Britain. When two Brits are introduced to each other, if they can't think of anything else to talk about, they will talk about weather. When two people meet in the street, they will often say something weather-related as they pass, just to show their friendliness. Every daily paper publishes a weather forecast. Both the radio and television give the weather forecast several times each day. The English also say that they have three variants of weather: when it rains in the morning, when it rains in the afternoon or when it rains all day long. Sometimes it rains so heavily that they say "It's raining cats and dogs". Rainfall is more or less even throughout the year. The driest period is from March to June and the wettest months are from October to January. The average range of temperature is from 15 to 23 Celsius degrees above zero. During a normal summer the temperature sometimes rises above 30 degrees in the south. Winter temperatures below 10 degrees are rare. It seldom snows heavily in winter, and frost is rare. January and February are usually the coldest months, and July and August the warmest. Still the wind may bring winter cold in spring, or on summer days. Sometimes it brings whirlwinds or hurricanes. Droughts are rare. So, we can say that British climate has three main features: it is mild, humid and changeable. That means that it is never too hot nor too cold. Winters are extremely mild. Snow may come but it melts quickly. In winter the cold is a humid cold, not of the dry variety. This humid and mild climate pattern is good for plants and in early spring trees and flowers begin to blossom. Theme 7 An Englishman`s home is his castle. How is it in your country? The same an Englishmen`s home is his castle is well-known. It illustrates the desire of privacy and the importance attached to ownership which seems to be at the heart of the British attitude to housing. Moreover, hitting of bedrooms in GB is considerate to be even immoral and people have begun to use bathrooms only before the World War II. Almost everybody in Britain dreams of living in a detached house. That is a house which is a separate building. It`s important for an Englishman to have his own green house, front door and the stair case which he adores. England is a kingdom of privacy that could use an image of a hedge as a blazon and a motto "My house is my castle". Though every foreigner has heard this phrase before coming to England, he makes sure that its true sense is really capacious and it is understood An Englishman subconsciously desires to part his privacy from the outside world. And the threshold of his house works as a boundary in this particular sense. "We like to be on our own"- one of the favorites phrases says. Whatever the relationships between the neighbors, each of them stands behind his own hedges side. Even if the territories are not marked, their borders are still honored as if there were a stout wall. When unknowing children cross this invisible boundary, they are immediately taken away with apologies. The right of extraterritoriality can only be used by such English sacred creatures as cats and dogs. It is accepted to treat neighbors cheerfully, attentively but without any familiarity, that could seem unwanted invasion in privacy. The first rule is don’t get involved in private business. The way your neighbor live, the customs and rules of his home shouldn’t concern anyone but him. Any Englishman instinctively treats his house as a besieged castle. His dwelling seems to be turned back to the street. And if the host decides to sit in the sunlight in summer, he will definitely sit in the backyard, but not in front of the house. The outer world must stay behind the threshold. Any strangers and unwanted guests are talked to only through a fastened door, without invitation to come in the house. That doesn’t mean that English people are inhospitable. But any guests are invited only in advance (usually two or three weeks before an event) and for definite time. It’s not acceptable to come to your friends without invitation or informing them with a telephone call. Unexpected sound of doorbell can be rarely heard in London. This can happen usually on Christmas Eve that can be charity donations collectors or Christmas visitors: paperboy, milkman or garbage collector, that hope to get some holiday tips. A house serves as a castle for an Englishman, where he can hide not only from unwanted visitor but also from pestered troubles. For an Englishman crossing this threshold means moving to completely different world, that isn’t connected with the world of his everyday labor. Considering his house a center of existence, an Englishman wants it to be comfortable, but he is not keen on making his house look like a showcase. As a temple of private life, an English house is not designed to marvel guests but to be convenient for its owners. But as for the visitors: relatives or close friends, there is no need to pull the wool over their eyes. Theme 8 How can the weather affect people`s health and mood? What kind of weather do you prefer? Why? People are said to be obsessed by the weather and with the unpredictable weather that we have to face daily that`s not surprising. And of course our moods are bound to be affected by this constant change. One might feel depressed for days if the sky is overcast and the sun fails to face through the clouds/ in just the same way rain can put you in a bad mood. Although the winter is not normally very cold it`s the damp that makes us moody. However, when the sun shines our mood lifts. A rainbow alter a storm can make us feel extremely optimistic. A spring breeze can be refreshing and a sunny day can make us feel lovely. There is nothing like English summer to cheer us up. With clear blue skies and cotton wool clouds you can feel on top of the world. But the weather can affect not only our mood but also our health. Doctors are starting realize that ordinary cold weather can bring depression, severe headaches and asthma. Suffers from rheumatism and asthma have long complained of feeling worse when it rains, but more dangerously, a very cold period can bring on fatal heart attacks and strokes in the elderly. So, as for me, I like hot summer weather and I feel more comfortable in scorching weather than in chilly and rainy one. I can`t explain it may be it`s just because I was living the whole my life in the boiling and dry climate. Theme 10 |
