CORPORATE STRUCTURE OF ALROSA Вариант 1. 1 курс, 2 семестр. DIAMOND MINING INDUSTRY OF MIRNY REGION ALROSA I. Read and translate the following text: Russia accounts for approximately one-third of global diamond production, most of which is mined in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Mirny is a small industrial town, which proudly bears the title of the capital of the diamond province. The richest diamond deposits and the largest diamond mines are located in the region. They are the source of national wealth and sustainable development of Yakutia. Mir Mine Mir Mine is a diamond mine located in Mirny. The open pit is 525 meters deep and has a diameter of 1,200 m, and is the second largest excavated hole in the world, after Bingham Canyon Mine. The deposit was discovered on June 13, 1955 by Soviet geologists Yuri Khabardin, Ekaterina Yelagina and Viktor Avdeenko from Amakinskaya Exploration and Prospecting Expedition. They found traces of volcanic rock called kimberlite which is usually associated with diamonds. This finding was the first success in the search for kimberlites in Russia, after numerous unsuccessful expeditions of the 1940s and 1950s. The development of the mine had started in 1957 in extremely harsh climate conditions. In the 1960s the mine was producing 10,000,000 carats (2,000 kg) of diamond per year. The upper layers of the mine (down to 340 meters) had very high diamond content of 4 carats (0.80 g) per ton of ore. The yield decreased to about 2 carats (0.40 g) per ton and the production rate slowed to 2,000,000 carats (400 kg) per year near the pit bottom. The largest diamond of the mine was found on the 23th of December 1980; it weighed 342.5 carats (68 g) and was named "26th Congress of CPSU". The mine operation was interrupted in 1990s at a depth of 340 m after the pit bottom became flooded but resumed later. The construction of underground mine started in 1999. The life of the mine was estimated to last for another 27 years. This estimate was based on depth exploration drilling down to 1220 meters. International mine The International underground mine is located 17 km from the town of Mirny. Diamonds from the International pipe are unique and especially valued in the world market for their gem quality. The open-pit mining at the International deposit started in 1971. In 1980, the open-pit mine reached the depth of 284 meters and operations were suspended until 2008. In the mid-1970s, the construction of the underground mine started. Today the mine’s design capacity of 500,000 tons of ore per annum has been reached. The expected mine life is 27 years. II. Read and translate the text.
